Case Study #1 was for the owner of a 30-foot
SeaRay pleasure yacht. The vessel was recently purchased
and upon its first sea trial significant amounts of water
were seen penetrating the hull. the boat was immediately
put into dry storage where it was discovered that the previous
owner had attempted to cover up a major defect in the hull
probably from sort of collision damage. HullScan was brought
in to determine the extent of the damage for repair purposes.
The yacht was appraised at around $3000.00 in its damaged
state. The fraud could have been avoided if a pre-purchased
HullScan was used.
Case study #2 was for the owner of a 34'
foot sport fishing vessel who upon leaving for the Hudson
Canyon in the evening struck a submerged object, launched
the boat out of the water and critically damaged the propellers
and rudders Upon hauling the vessel there were severe scrapes
in the bottom paint where the collision took place. The
owner hired HullScan because he was unsure if the integrity
of the hull had been compromised, despite not seeing any
major structural damage. HullScan revealed that the hull
was indeed structurally acceptable where the collision had
occurred, but found other defect areas of water infiltration
non-related to the accident. The owner was very grateful
and had minor defects repaired while his boat was in dry
storage.
Case study #3 was for a potential buyer of a 1974 40' Viking Convertible. The buyer was impressed with the overall visible condition of the vessel. She was well maintained and in above average condition for her age. However, due to the vessel age (30 years) the buyer was hesitant to proceed because he was unsure how sound a 30-year-old hull would be. Older Viking yachts are well known for their well-built hulls but what was the condition after 30 years of use? HullScan was retained by the boats owner to analyze the hull's current condition via their proprietary scanning technology. At the competition of the scanning process it was determined that after 30 years this well made hull was still "rock solid" which made the owner very happy and the buyer even happier.
